Seeing Actors
How does one find the best actor for a role? How then does one capture that actor’s performance with the movie camera? These may sound like straightforward questions of methodology, but for director Patrick Wang they are areas ripe for innovation. In this talk, he will discuss his favorite discoveries working with actors in the audition room and on set. Using his background in theater and photography, he will make the case for why the actor, at the intersection of psychology and technique, is the most exciting technology available to a film.
Patrick Wang was born in Texas, the son of Taiwanese immigrants. He graduated from MIT with a degree in economics and music and theater arts. He is director of the films In the Family (“An indie masterpiece”—Roger Ebert), The Grief of Others (Cannes, SXSW), and A Bread Factory (nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards). He is also a poetry translator (Ivan Bunin, Georg Trakl, Julian Tuwim) and photography curator (Russell Lee, Lewis Hine).
