weaving the web — Projects, 1st year, Master’s degree in Communication Design, 2021/22
weaving the web presents projects developed in the 1st year of the master’s degree in Communication Design (Belas-Artes, ULisboa) that reflect the post-digital and post-internet era characterized by the ubiquity of computational infrastructures and the blurring of boundaries between online and offline modes of existence.
Interweaving, unweaving, and reweaving the Web, the projects confront its initial idealization, as a democratic information space powered by the Internet, with its current technological and social fabric. They address the volatility of knowledge in the face of disinformation dissemination. They examine surveillance capitalism and explore the potential and implications of personal data extraction. They question how artificial intelligence systems incorporate or reinforce cultural biases. They explore modes of knowledge production and preservation, addressing the role of the archive in reconstructing social memory. They also reflect on the modes of action, reaction and inaction that social networks promote.
The projects gathered in this website creatively explore the confluence between media to reflect on how the internet and computational technologies shape our perception and experience of reality, highlighting their effects on contemporary culture.
