postgraduate course / 2 semesters / 60 ects
DOES NOT PROVIDE AN ACADEMIC DEGREE
OBJECTIVES
The postgraduate course Tile and Ceramics: Production, history, confluences, collections, exhibitions and conservation centres on azulejo (Portuguese word for tile), an art with a great tradition in Portugal. It is intended to walk an itinerary on the tile starting with its production processes. In a subsequent moment, the origin of the tile is studied, from the most remote moments, in different civilizations. The tile is analysed as an art of confluences, because each culture has given and received contributions in terms of technology, aesthetics, use and application. The tile in Portugal resulted from other traditions, but created its own language. There was a social need that embraced tile as an essential art in Portuguese architectural spaces. The taste for azulejos led to collecting, contributing to the creation of some internationally renowned museums in Portugal. Today, tile is an art that continues between tradition, associated with the need for conservation and preservation of existing assets, and artistic and technological innovations.
