nikias skapinakis Congress
1ST > 2ND MARCH 2023 I LAGOA HENRIQUES AUDITORIUM
The National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL), through the Center for Studies and Research in Fine Arts (CIEBA), the Institute of Art History (IHA) of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH), and the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (CIEG), of the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ISCSP-ULisboa) organize from March 1st to the 2nd, 2023, the Nikias Skapinakis Congress.
This congress pays tribute to the Portuguese artist, who died on August 26, 2020, and author of an extensive and remarkable work that unfolded through painting, drawing and engraving, with a very personal path, rooted in an interdisciplinary personal nature, whose chromatic richness and expressive is not limited to the strong focus on portrait, although he has a particularly strong focus on this theoretical and plastic path, in an analysis that underlines the relevance of different sources such as history, literature, and everyday life for his artistic creation.
Alongside the congress, MNAC will organize an exhibition of the artist, with works that Skapinakis deliberately kept in his possession, creating a personal museum of his own work. The exhibition will be curated by Helena Skapinakis and Maria Aires Silveira.
