Applications from graduating students
Applications are accepted from students who are in the process of completing a degree at a Portuguese higher education institution.
To this end, and in place of the document proving the academic degree, the candidate must submit a Declaration, under oath, that they are, in the academic year 2023/2024, in the process of completing a Licenciado’s degree, with an indication of the expected final classification. In this case, admission to the postgraduate course is subject to the submission of a document proving that the degree has been obtained, which must be submitted by a date to be announced in the application calendar. If this is not submitted by the deadline, the right to enrol and register for the course is considered extinguished.
On the other hand, in situations where the conditionally admitted student completes their course with a final classification lower than the expected final classification indicated in the declaration, their admission is cancelled, except in situations where the number of applicants to the course is lower than the number of places set.

- Portfolio*
* For all practical post-graduation courses it is also necessary to present a portfolio (ex.: sound art: experimental processes; sound arts: creation practices and technologies, circular design: cultural, systemic and material modes, digital experience design, contemporary photography speeches, scientific illustration, illustration and visual narrative, and more). In the case of audiovisual records, the candidate may indicate in a specific area of the portfolio a link to a digital repository.
All documents required for the application process must be submitted in digital format, as a PDF file.
Legalization of foreign documents
If you have completed your degree/course abroad, and haven’t made any prior application for it’s registration, recognition or equivalence in Portugal, for the Mestrado application process it’s required the legalisation of your degree certificate under the Portuguese legislation. Authentic documents issued in a foreign country are considered legalized in Portugal as long as the signature of the public servent who issued it is recognized by a portuguese diplomatic or consular officer in that country and authenticated with the respective consular stamp. Similarly, if the country where the degree was obtained is a party of the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 (Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents), you can alternatively authenticate the certificate by the Hague Apostille Convention.
Certificates issued in member countries of the European Union do not require legalization.
If the documents are not in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages by a translator recognized by the Portuguese diplomatic representation in the country where the document was issued. Similarly, the following authorities can also carry out and certify translations: notaries; consulate in Portugal of the country where the document was issued and suitable translator; conservadores of any Conservatória; lawyers and solicitadores.
In the process of selection there’s an overall assessment of your application, subject to a numerical scale of 0 to 20 values, in which the following criteria will be considered:
- Final rank of academic degree. In the case of academic degrees obtained in foreign higher education institutions (when the foreign higher education institution adopts a different scale from the Portuguese), the mark will be the result of the proportional conversion of the obtained grade to the Portuguese grading system;
- Academic, scientific, technical and artistic curriculum and / or portfolio.
Applicants will be ranked according to the score obtained in the evaluation, resulting from the simple arithmetic average of the classifications attributed to each of the selection criteria, and candidates who obtain a grade lower than 9.5 will be excluded from the selection procedure. The assessment parameters are described in Annex I to the Regulation of Graduate Studies of the Faculty of Fine Arts.
An interview can take place if the Course Coordinator considers necessary, in which case it will be included in the evaluation criteria indicated above. Candidates who do not attend the interview will be excluded from the selection procedure.
Admission and enrolment conditions
The admitted candidates must perform their enrolment and registration during the periods set out. At the time of registration and enrolment is mandatory the payment of the first instalment of the tuition fee (30% of the total annual tuition fee in the case of international students) along with the registration fee. In case of withdrawal of the course, duly formalized, the student is only relieved from paying the tuition fees’ instalments that have not expired. The payment made by the registration and enrolment is not refunded in case of withdrawal.
The issue by the Academic Services of the declaration of acceptance to the approved students in the application process, is subject to the payment of the above amounts. Placement in the course is only valid for the registration and enrolment in the academic year concerned in the application.
Other information for graduating students
Students who have been admitted on a conditional basis – students who are in the process of completing their degree – must pay, as a deposit, a fee equivalent to the first instalment of the tuition fee due for the academic year, within the time limit set. Enrolment and registration will only take place once the certificate proving completion of the degree has been presented.
In cases where it is not possible to definitively admit a student, the amount paid as a deposit may be refunded. A student placed on a conditional basis may not be admitted for the following reasons reasons:
- failure to complete the degree;
- failure to present the supporting certificate by the deadline;
- when the degree has been completed with a final classification lower than the expected final classification indicated in the declaration of honor submitted in the application, except in situations where the number of applicants to the course is lower than the number of places set.
Failure to pay the above mentioned deposit by the deadline will result in forfeiture of the right to enrol and register on the course, and the Faculty may call the next candidate on the placement list until the place is filled or there are no candidates for the competition in question.
The final issuance by the Academic Services of a declaration of acceptance to the students approved and admitted in the selection process is conditional on the payment of the amounts mentioned. Placement on the course is only valid for enrolment and registration in the academic year to which the application relates.
Admission to the course is also conditional on the submission to the Academic Services, by the date to be announced in the application calendar, of the original or certified copy of the documents proving the access qualifications, except when these relate to qualifications obtained at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon.
