postgraduate course / 2 semesters / 60 ects
DOES NOT PROVIDE AN ACADEMIC DEGREE
OBJECTIVES
The postgraduate course Technical History of Art investigates transdisciplinary paths to preserve cultural heritage, through the point of view of art history, materials and techniques. The perception of the work of art, and the specific research on its artistic and iconographic context, its production technique, as well as the deterioration of the materials and its degradation mechanisms are highlighted.
It leads to specific measures, which can be used to stop, or at least slow down the degradation of our cultural heritage. The technical history of art is a discipline that brings to light the work of art in all its uniqueness. Different case studies of Portuguese and Iberian heritage will be highlighted. Essential aspects concerning a work of art, such as its authenticity, its reproducibility, its materiality, its permanence over time, but also the fragility of its materials will be discussed. A multidisciplinary methodology, which evolves together with the newest analytical and technical documentation of the work of art will be kept in perspective. Experienced academics that study, analyse and take care of the works of art will be invited to talk about their research work. Also, an approach to the artist-creator will take place. The conservation (or not) of the artist’s work and the perishability or longevity of the materials he uses will be also a theme under discussion.
