SOUNDABLA BODIES CAN BE SPECULATED
8TH > 29TH FEBRUARY 2024 I CAMÕES LIBRARY
Cay has been intimated related to sound ever since. The stir of a spoon in an earthenware mug. A whistle that blows around the corner. An acoustic tile room in a church. A plate that hits the ground. Our primary concern, as professors of the Ceramics Studio of the master’s in Sciences and Arts of Glass and Ceramics, a partnership of FCT-UNOVA with Faculty of Fine Arts of ULisbon and VICARTE, is to stimulate the capacity of playing with clay in a creative manner and understanding the matter’s feedback while working tridimensional speculation. For so, this exhibition is the result of a speculative and experimental workshop aiming to interweave clay and sound through both visible/not visible tridimensional spaces, thus rendering multissensorial experiences through these material bodies of ceramic sculpture. The event program joined the invited researchers Naya Castillo and Hans Rutz from the Spatial Design Lab of Technical University of Graz and Helena Elias and Marta Castelo, both professors at the department of Sculpture of the FBAUL.
The presence of different composed clay bodies in various shapes, with interior spaces that are not immediately visible, may be rendered through the materiality of sound enacted by the participant. Feedback is a term used in the field of music and may also stand for reverberating clay matters in ceramics. It also may signify a process through which we obtain an opinion, information, and response to what is addressed or a modification or control of a process or system by its effects. At the same time, the space that hosts the exhibition and the materiality in it also modulates the possible combinations of interaction occurring with the participants and the installations and sculptures. The event also decenters vision as principal constructor of visuality. Vibrant matters on their way, for sure!
